Worried about the future

I will be a high school junior in the fall of this coming school year. During my sophomore year, I was under immense stress dealing with the loss of my mother during my freshman year & furthermore having a part time job that became more of a full time job during the holiday season. Needless to say, school was no longer a priority of mine during freshman or sophomore year. During my freshman year, I failed algebra & during sophomore I failed geometry and u.s. history. I’ve wanted to be a school teacher my whole life. If I work my hardest and achieve good grades the next two years, will a college accept me? I’m looking for some reassurance I’ve been encountering sleepless nights.

    [Short answer: Yes.

You are still young and you have many opportunities. Extra classes during the summer (summer school OR extra-curricular college courses that can count towards high school credits), extra classes (early morning, after regular school hours), or even work-experience type credits can help you.

Talk to your guidance counselor as soon as possible and find out what options you have. Because of the hardships you have been dealing with, you may be able to get some leeway and they may allow you to make up some of the failed classes on the side to catch up. I don’t know, as I’m not familiar with your school district.

You can achieve whatever you set your mind to. I promise you that. Yes, it can take hard work, and sometimes it can feel like you’re the only one who cares, but there will always be people rooting for you and hoping that you do well.
I don’t know you, but I’m pulling for you. I dropped out my freshman year of high school. I got my GED. I am now in my first year of college, nearly 15 years later. It can be done, and it is done all the time.

    You can do it.

[Well, I’m a high school teacher by day, so… to answer your question:

    Yes.

Of course, there’s no guarantee that your first choice for college will accept you. But I promise you, if you have the will, you will get into a college. That’s not something you should worry about, because options abound for post-secondary education.

Good luck! And feel free to follow up with us if you need any words of advice.

[I am so sorry for your loss.

Yes, you can absolutely get into college. :-). I agree with the first poster-talk to your guidance counselor and see if you can retake those classes give the dire situation that caused you to fail the first time. Even if you can’t, do your best in you junior and senior year, add on e cuticular activities and on your college application, explain what happened your first two years

Best of luck my dear. I have no doubt you will shine.

[Consider this 4 for 4 (so far) in saying that, despite those classes Freshman and Sophomore year, college is most certainly still an option for you.

If you want college to be a reality, then you can make it a reality, no matter what sort of pitfall you think you may have stumbled on.

It may require some hard work but you can turn things around for yourself. Keep in mind that some colleges/universities/even scholarships not only look at your grade and academic scores but your extracurricular activities as well. If there are clubs, sports, etc., you’re interested in; don’t let your worries pull you away from those either.

Everyone above press on excellent points; from counselors, to not getting discouraged if you don’t get into your first choice.

The key is to press on and remember you are the master of your fate.
