“I want to drop out of school and be a YouTuber”

How can I tell my mom that in a few months I’m dropping out if school and won’t go to college? I want to be a YouTuber and entertain people like I have my entire life. I love video games, but my mom hates it. Anything that happens (even if it doesn’t make sense) she blames video games. She never sees any side except her own and she won’t like or listen to anything I say because that’s how she always is.

School starts in 1 month and I’m too scared to ask her to take me out even though I will do it anyway when I turn 16 in a few months. I want to do this because I can’t fathom getting an 8+ hour job and still being able to play with my online friends and worry about other lively things.

In my opinion my friend, your mum just wants what she thinks is best for you, she’s not your enemy or someone you should dread telling things, she’s in your corner. I think if you can come up with a well thought out plan, with contingencies accounted for, goals, intentions, etc the works and it can clearly demonstrate why this would be the best idea for you, then i’m sure she would at least listen to what you have to say. You’re plan has got to be perfect though, because in terms of old world meeting new world your intention could seem unrealistic to her.

    Best of luck

I agree with Zach. If you can prove to her that you can support yourself COMPLETELY (aka you buy your own car, pay her rent, pay car insurance, buy your food, pay your health insurance, ect.) then I think you can convince her, but honestly I agree with your mother that right now your business plan isn’t sound just yet.

    Let me ask you this:

Are you already making any money on YouTube? Or is this just a dream/goal at this point?

If you’re already making money on YouTube, and you’re making enough where you can 1) pay rent on a place, and 2) have enough left over each month for food and incidentals, then sure, I’d say to go for it.

If not … yeah, you may want to consider having a backup plan. In your case, that’s what school is for.

I second Dennis. It’s great that you have your own dreams, but the reality today is that if you had to pay rent and buy food, would you be able to do so on your own?

And also, not everyone who goes to school gets an 8 hour job sitting in an office. Denzel Washington has a college degree, and I don’t think he has an office job. I could name many more but you get my point.

If you’re going to drop out, I would say at least finish high school, because if you fail at this YouTube career, what is your plan B?

Hello! I know it seems awful to hear, but school is important, and you should stick with it! I lso agree with the others, it isn’t easy to make money on youtube–have you tried? It seems like the only way to make her see your side is to show her you can do. Why not try part time while going to school? This could even help build a fan base.

Hey mate. Totally do it – BUT keep going to school. Have a back up plan. Perdue that dream like crazy but have a back up plan. Your mum will feel better, you’ll put less pressure on yourself. Also, is school okay for you? If you have other issues with school talk to her about it. Maybe you can change schools or change some things. Keep dreaming, aim high – but finish school as it is harder to do later in life. Good luck.

What do you think?
